Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has called out the Opposition for organising anti-government demonstrations over the high cost of living. In his statement on Saturday, Ruto said the Azimio side now knows better than to hold demonstrations.
He added that the Raila Odinga-led side, is no longer asking for subsidies. The President insisted that the government has no problem with the opposition, and that all they ask is that they help unite and build the country.
“Sasa wameanza kuchanuka, I heard them the other day. They have stopped demonstrations they just meet, talk and go home. That is nice, we have no problem, as long as properties are not destroyed we have no problem,” Ruto said.
He spoke at the thanksgiving ceremony of Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo, in Elgeyo Marakwet. Azimio has been leading a series of demos across the country to protest over the high cost of living among other issues.
On Tuesday, Azimio led a rally at Kamukunji grounds where they resolved to embark on a campaign of defiance and civil disobedience which will take different forms at different times.
Raila said the defiance will include refusal to pay taxes whose aim is to push Ruto out of office. Azimio will on July 7 hold a rally at Kamukunji to unveil nationwide civil disobedience.
