Africa-Press – Kenya. Five pupils from Ebenezer Academy in Busia who were involved in an accident at Kaburengu on June 24 and admitted to the hospital have been discharged.
Also discharged are a school driver and a teacher. The five pupils, school head James Ouma told the Star on the phone on Sunday were allowed to join family after their condition stabilised.
Two of those discharged had been admitted at Life Care Hospital in Bungoma while three were receiving treatment at Bungoma Referral Hospital. Ouma however, said one pupil is still admitted at Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu. He said the condition of the learner was stable.
The school head said doctors at the hospital had reported to the school that the patient may also be discharged anytime. Ouma said the school driver and a teacher who had been admitted at Bungoma Referral Hospital had also been discharged.
He however said another teacher who had been receiving treatment at Webuye County Hospital had been transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for specialised treatment.
The teacher, Ouma said, sustained a head injury that required special medical attention. He remained optimistic that the teacher will also be discharged.
LAID TO REST Ouma spoke to the Star after two of the pupils who perished during the accident were interred on Saturday. One learner was laid to rest at her parent’s home in Sidingi, Siaya County, while the other was buried at Bumala.
One of the remaining six will be buried on Thursday while the other five will be accorded a final send-off Friday. Initially, the burial of the six was to happen on Friday and Saturday, but the programme changed after the parents of the deceased and the school agreed to inter them before Saturday.
The Kaburengu black spot where the eight pupils perished has been in the limelight for recurrent accidents for years running. Some 16 people have lost lives at the black spot in the last about one month.
The stretch of the highway between Turbo and Webuye town has claimed 88 lives since January 1. On June 4, four people died at the black spot after a trailer ferrying goods to Uganda lost control and crushed a motorbike rider. One day later, a cargo truck hit and killed four people who were returning home in Malava after attending a relative’s funeral in Bungoma.
