Blow to Kenya teams as World Beach Games cancelled

Africa-Press – Kenya. The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) World Beach Games that were set for Bali, Indonesia next month have been cancelled, dealing a blow to Kenya teams that had qualified.

The cancellation was inevitable after the Indonesian City withdrew as hosts and there’s no time for ANOC to find an alternative.

“It is with great surprise and extreme disappointment that ANOC has learned that the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) has withdrawn from its commitment to host the ANOC World Beach Games and the ANOC General Assembly in August 2023,” ANOC expressed in a statement.

The women’s football, wrestling, aquathlon, and women’s handball had qualified for the tournament. Doha hosted the inaugural edition in 2019. 14 disciplines were expected in this year’s showpiece, including surfing.

“The decision at such late notice prevents ANOC from being able to find an alternative host. So there is no option but to cancel this year’s edition,” the statement added.

The ANOC further revealed that the KOI had informed them that the budget for the Games still needed to be released by the Indonesian government.

Despite facing challenges in the preparations, KOI had assured ANOC of finding solutions and proceed with hosting the games.

Wrestlers Mathayo Mahabila and Mark Omumasaba had also qualified for the games.
