Africa-Press – Kenya. Vihiga County CEC for Sports, Onzere Mulongo, says the 2023/2024 budget will this time feature the development of infrastructure besides funding clubs.

Mulongo said the development of sports infrastructure will help a lot in nurturing more talents at the grassroots.

“We also want to have our own stadiums in this county and it will be important to give a few playgrounds a face-lift,” said Mulongo his office at the county headquarters in Mbale town.

He said Vihiga County is the only county with over four teams that are playing at the national level yet they have always been forced to hire grounds in Kakamega county.

“We will save a lot of money by putting up our own stadiums because this will reduce the cost of travel and hiring playgrounds,” he noted.

Currently, Vihiga County has Vihiga Queens and Bunyore Starlets who are playing in Kenya Women’s Premier League (KWPL).

They also have Vihiga Bullets who are staring at relegation in the Kenya Premier League, Vihiga United featuring in the National Super League (NSL) and Luanda Villa FC currently in NSL after playing three seasons in Division One.

Mulongo urged clubs in the county seeking funding to submit their requirements to the board as per the laws. He said the county will not facilitate any private entity as demanded by some clubs.

“We have the regulations in place and any team that needs to get any financial support must comply with it,” Mulongo said.
