Africa-Press – Kenya. Katakwa Secondary School ladies’ football team is appealing for financial support from the Busia County government and well-wishers ahead of their maiden appearance at the regional school games in Kakamega.

The regional championships will be played in Kakamega starting July 17. The Teso North Sub County school qualified to the regional showpiece despite losing to St.Joseph’s Chakol in the county finals played over the weekend.

Assistant coach Daniel Kituyi said the team is in dire need to acquire the playing regalia. “Throughout the competition, my girls played on bare feet. The uniforms were borrowed from Katakwa Football Club,” Kituyi said.

“We need at least Sh90,000 to purchase 20 pairs of boots and another Sh50,000 to purchase two pairs of uniform and other incidentals,” Kituyi observed. Shot stopper Brenda Amase was feted the best player of the tournament while Mary Achom emerged the top scorer after notching up four goals.

Kituyi, who doubles up as the school’s games master, went on: “The duo of Amase and Achom, who is in form four, have caught the attention of scouts that have approached them with a view of joining the national team, Harambee Starlets.”

Katakwa is relishing the tough task awaiting them, ready to discredit the notion of a ‘small school’. “We are going to give the likes of Archbishop Njenga and Butere a run for their money. They must be prepared because we won’t be pushovers in the competition.

“Our future plan is to invest more in the team by offering them adequate training and equipment,” Kituyi said.

“Being a ‘small school’, we have an obligation to prove a point.”
