Africa-Press – Kenya. Mwiruti Secondary School wants to enter the history books as the first Uasin Gishu football team to qualify for the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association national championships.
Head coach Fredrick Owino said he feels the team is ripe for the grand stage after numerous failed attempts. Mwiruti clinched the Uasin Gishu title over the weekend to book their slot at the Rift Valley regional championships set for Laikipia county next weekend.
Owino’s side are returning to the regional championships for the first time in eight years, determined to rock next month’s national championships in Kakamega.
“We have laid the foundation to enable us reach the national championships. We want to break the jinx of now that no Uasin Gishu county football team has ever played at the nationals. This should come to an end this year,” said Owino.
This will be the school’s fourth time to play at the region. The last time they played was in 2017 when they lost in the preliminary rounds. “We are going there as competitors, not participants,” said Owino.
He said his biggest weapon will be to play numerous build-up matches to ensure his players are ready to navigate the regional championships with ease.
“I like playing against clubs as compared to fellow school teams. Clubs have the experience needed to harden my players. We are going to have as many friendly matches as possible against the big clubs in our region,” said Owino.
Owino said beating Wareng High was the easiest match he has ever had. They beat their nemesis 4-0 in the county final to add to their remarkable feat of seeing off the then champions Arnesens 3-2 on post-match penalties following a two-all draw in normal and extra time.
