Africa-Press – Kenya. The Raila Odinga ODM-led party on Friday condemned the police for using force on journalists covering Milimani courts. The party in a statement said the freedom of the press was being suppressed.
“Kenya is fast being turned into a police state where even the freedom of the press is being suppressed,” ODM said.
The party said the press was being suppressed by overzealous police officers who ODM claimed had firm instructions to beat anyone in sight including media personnel.
ODM was reacting to a video where police were seen roughing up journalists who attempted to cover a bail ruling court hearing at Milimani courts. The media had arrived to cover Embakasi East MP Babu Owino’s bail ruling.
There was a heavy presence of armed police outside the court chambers. In a video seen by the Star, police are seen chasing journalists away. A photojournalist is seen falling on the staircase after being pushed.
