Africa-Press – Kenya. Former Buccaneers captain Winstone Chekai says his move to join the champions’ National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) is a dream come true. He attributed the achievement to his teammates who helped him get spotted by NCPB who are the national and regional champions.
“It was my biggest dream to join NCPB and I am happy it came to pass. I attribute this milestone to my teammates at Buccaneers because they have made me who I am today,” he offered.
“I used to train hard with the aim of winning both the KHF league and Super Cup. I also wanted to make the cut in the national team.” He revealed that his biggest drive is to help the team achieve their goals and objectives and at the same time, attain personal glory.
“I understand that NCPB presents me with opportunities and challenges which I am ready to embrace. As the season begins, we are determined to start on a high and I am happy to be part of the family.”
Chekai joins two other players —Morgan Simiyu and Julius Chiundu— both from Kenyatta University, who signed for NCPB. The Millers’ tactician believes the trio will push the team to greater heights. “I believe the players we have signed will add value to the men’s team,” beamed an elated coach Mathews.
The NCPB women’s team, who were placed third in the league, last season were also boosted with the arrival of Elizabeth Alungat and Sharon Akoth from Net Navigators and Naomi Wamalwa from Bungoma-based Rangers.
“We are going all out to defend our men’s crown and to improve our women’s side. Besides the effort to reign supreme, we also want to make our followers happy by playing a brand of handball that is eye-catching.”
NCPB won the national league without losing any of their 18 matches. They garnered 35 points after battling runners KDF to a pulsating 30-30 draw in their last fixture of the season. The women’s side finished behind champions and Super Cup winners Nairobi Water Queens and second-placed Ulinzi Sharks while Rangers finished fourth.
