Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Davis Cup captain George Oyoo has proposed a training camp in Spain ahead of next year’s tournament.
Team Kenya missed out on promotion after losing 2-1 in the semifinals to Nigeria in the Davis Cup Group Four tournament at Kigali, Rwanda.
The former international believes exposure and longer training periods will help the team progress. “Going forward, if the federation can get us a training camp outside the country, we will be in a better space to challenge the top nations on the continent,” he added.
Oyoo said he may have to come up with new doubles pairing after struggling in the category in the two losses to Nigeria and Ghana.
“I started Changawa (Ismael) and Ibrahim Yego in the first game against Ghana then changed to Kean Shah and Ibrahim in the semi-final against Nigeria and it worked.
“However, going forward, we need to tweak our plays, because this is where we lost the match in the double. So next year I believe we will be stronger,” noted Oyoo.
He encouraged his charges to also participate in more tournaments before next year.
“The more tournaments they play, the better they become, so it will be key to play international tournaments next year before we assemble for the Davis Cup,” he noted. He hailed the improvement from last year when Team Kenya got relegated from Group 3.
“For us, it’s been a big improvement but we are not satisfied and we want to get promoted come next year,” noted Oyoo.
The tactician said he will scout for new talent at next week’s Kenya Open. “I will be attending the tournament to see the new talent we can incorporate into the wider training squad for next year,” he observed.
Team Kenya lost to Ghana 2-1 before bouncing back to thrash Cameroon and Botswana 3-0 respectively to set up a semifinal showdown with Nigeria, where they lost 2-1.
Ghana and Nigeria were promoted to Group 3 while Botswana and highly fancied Mozambique were relegated to Group 5.
