Africa-Press – Kenya. Two armed men were on Sunday night, August 2, left dead after a shootout with police officers in Kilimani’s Chania Avenue, Nairobi County.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspected robbers had successfully subdued a taxi driver and his client and made their way with a cab operator’s Toyota Vitz and phones belonging to the two.
The two were armed with a Russian-made pistol and two other handguns.
As the assailants were bolting away believing that they had made a successful carjacking, DCI officers who were answering distress calls by the victims, blocked their way and ordered them to surrender.
The suspects defied the lawful order by the police and opened fire on them as they dashed out of the car in an attempt to take to their heels and disappear from the vicinity.
The police officers tactically responded with rapid shots causing a gun battle that turned fatal. They fatally injured the suspects.
The police managed to recover the car, three guns belonging to the assailants, and four mobile phones including two belonging to the victims. Six rounds of unused ammunition were also recovered after the incident.
After the incident, the victims were escorted to safety as the bodies of the gangsters were ferried to the city morgue ahead of identification.
This incident comes just a month after a Facebook user by the name of Sikika Road Safety posted a trick used by carjackers to trap their victims.
Sikika indicated that gangsters are injecting iron nails into oranges and laying them as bait on Kenyan roads.
Unsuspecting motorists then step on the oranges while driving hence causing punctures on the tires.
The motorist then halts in an attempt to replace the punctured tires whereby the carjackers pounce on their prey.
In a separate incident, police apprehended five suspects alleged to take part in city carjackings that targeted taxis in town on February 17, 2021. According to the police, the five operated in Githurai, Ruiru and Kirigiti in Kiambu.
