Africa-Press – Kenya. Azimio’s planned mass action against the Kenya Kwanza government will be peaceful.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has affirmed that all protests by the opposition outfit to denounce government excesses and nondelivery of campaign promises will not involve acts of lawlessness.
“I want to issue an edict in accordance with Article 37, what we are doing today, what we shall do in the future as we go for the countdown, will be guided by our absolute adherence to Constitution 2010 and in particular Article 37, that we will do peaceful demonstrations,” he said.
The Azimio brigade led by Raila Odinga on Wednesday last week issued a 14-day ultimatum to government to lower the cost of living and open the IEBC servers or face mass action.
While addressing their supporters during Azimio prayer rally at Jevanjee gardens, Raila insisted that they will not relent in their push for electoral justice and respect to the rule of law.
Kalonzo’s assurance that the protests will be without incident comes a day after Embakasi East MP Babu Owino said he would rally university students to join the demos in protest of planned hike of university fees.
Speaking in Vihiga during a rally on Saturday, Babu said he could not promise that the demos would be peaceful.
“I can only promise that there will be demonstrations but I can’t promise whether they will be peaceful or not,” he said.
Kalonzo, however, assured the public that their picketing will be conducted in accordance with the law.
The former Vice President was speaking on Sunday during the coalition’s rally in Kitale.
Kalonzo noted that the law allowed demonstrations, picketing and assemblies as long as they were peaceful.
Babu said on Saturday that the mobilisation of university students would be all across the 47 counties.
He said this is the fate that awaits the government if it fails to reconsider its plan to increase university tuition fees.
The government plans to increase the fees from the current Sh16,000 to about Sh48,000.
“Don’t dare us. Education is one thing no one can take away from you and Education is the key that unlocks the golden door to freedom,” Babu said.
