Azimio: State should foot medical bills of Sondu clashes victims

Africa-Press – Kenya. Azimio now wants the government to support families affected by violence in Sondu in Kisumu County.

Azimio in a statement on Thursday said the violence has had a huge impact on the livelihoods and economic activities in the area.

Among the actions, the coalition wants the government to foot the bills of those who have been admitted to various hospitals after sustaining injuries.

Azimio termed the clashes as senseless murders and violence prevailing in Sondu adding that the violence is now taking a political dimension and breeding mistrust between residents.

“Consequently, we are asking the government to provide support to the families that have been affected by this violence,” Azimio said.

“Such support should include footing the medical bills for those who have sought treatment and helping with the burials of those who have been killed in this violence,” the statement reads.

Azimio has instead urged the residents to give peace a chance by putting down their arms and embracing each other as brothers and sisters they have been all along.

It has further appealed to the residents to resist and reject those inciting them to acts of violence and lawlessness that bring no value to the actors and the victims.

“We are calling on the government to immediately bring the violence to an end and to provide round-the-clock security to the residents,” Azimio said.

Azimio said those behind the violence and mayhem must be identified, arrested, and made to account for their actions.

So far seven people have been confirmed dead and others nursing serious injuries in the clashes that started on Tuesday night.

Residents of Sondu on Wednesday called on the government to intervene following clashes.

The clashes began on Tuesday night at the Kericho-Kisumu border around the Sondu market.

The residents while speaking to the media on Wednesday said they get their livelihood from the Sondu market and that the clashes have disrupted their income-generating activities.

Police said alleged gangs armed with bows and arrows crossed over from the neighbouring county and attacked residents on and around Sondu market.

The gangs allegedly stole castles as well.

Sondu is a small border town between Kisumu and Kericho counties.

On his part, Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o has called upon the national government to swiftly apprehend suspected criminals responsible for the conflicts.
