Africa-Press – Kenya. After months out with injury, Lewis Bandi finally stepped onto the pitch for Gor Mahia—and he did so in style, celebrating a 3-0 win over Sofapaka and vowing to fire the team to glory.

The former AFC Leopards captain had been sidelined since the CHAN tournament, making Sunday’s match his long-awaited debut for the record Kenyan champions.

Gor Mahia secured a comfortable victory, moving four points clear at the top of the Kenyan Premier League standings. “It feels amazing to be back on the field,” Bandi said after the match. “Being out was tough, but I stayed focused. Now I can help the team push for the title.”

Fans, who erupted in chants and celebration, embraced his return. He joined in with dancing and even made a playful shooting gesture with a toy gun, a move that drew mixed reactions, especially from disgruntled AFC Leopards supporters still smarting from his transfer.

“I know some fans are upset, and I get it,” he said. “But my focus is on Gor Mahia. This is my team now, and I want to give everything for these supporters.”

The right back, who won the 2025 Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at AFC Leopards, stressed that his move was motivated by ambition, not controversy. “I had great times at Leopards, and I learnt a lot there,” Bandi explained. “But this is a new challenge. My goal is to help Gor Mahia win trophies and keep the club at the top.”

Despite the rivalry and scrutiny, Bandi said the squad has made him feel at home. “The boys welcomed me immediately,” he said. “On the pitch, we fight for every ball together. I feel like I belong here already.”

Bandi emphasised the importance of focus and discipline as Gor Mahia aim to defend their crown.

He also spoke about the energy from the fans and the impact it has on performance.

“Celebrating with the supporters is incredible,” Bandi said. “Their energy pushes you to work harder and never give up. It’s one of the best feelings in football.”

Looking ahead, Bandi is determined to be consistent on the pitch and supportive off it. “I want to keep improving, help younger players, and give my all in every match,” he said. “Winning the league is not just my goal—it’s everyone’s goal. We’ll do it together.”

He admitted that returning from injury has been challenging but said he is now stronger and more motivated than ever.“Getting back to full speed took time,” he said. “I’m still building rhythm, but I feel fit, sharp, and ready for what’s ahead.”

About the pressure of playing for Kenya’s most successful club, Bandi was candid. “Gor Mahia comes with expectations, and I embrace that. Fans want results, and I’m ready to deliver.”

With the team atop the league and the title race heating up, Bandi’s arrival brings both talent and renewed confidence.

His words reflect a player eager to make a tangible impact and help Gor Mahia lift their 22nd Kenyan Premier League trophy.
