Africa-Press – Kenya. Boxing Federation of Kenya is set to resume activities in February long after the festive season, the body’s communications director Duncan ‘Sugar Ray’ Kuria has said.
Kuria said BFK’s first agenda upon resumption would be to roll out nationwide tournaments to identify suitable pugilists ahead of international assignments.
The activities, he added would be aligned with the International Boxing Federation’s calendar to forestall any inconveniences likely to be occasioned by conflicting dates.
“We shall begin with the novice boxing championships that will be hosted by all the 22 branches across the country.
“The top two contestants in each weight category will proceed to the intermediate level whose winners and runners up will secure berths to flex muscles at the Kenya Open,” said Kuria.
The events, he said, would be used to identify boxers who will fly the country’s flag at the forthcoming Africa Boxing Championship in Cameroon and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games slated for May and July respectively.
“It is at this stage that we’ll now be in a position to select a provisional Hit Squad comprising at least two boxers in each division just ensure each of the contestants has a sparring partner,” he added.
