Africa-Press – Kenya. The 2018 Roma Marathon champion Cosmas Birech hopes to make a major comeback next year after a tw0-year break due to injuries.
Birech, who is also the 2016 Lugano Half Marathon winner, said he had an issue with his tendon, which needed an operation. He said he is now back in training after a successful operation and he is looking forward to a busy season next year.
“I have been out for almost two years due to a tendon injury which was very painful and though I’m feeling good now,” he said.
He added that being out of season for that long has been a very challenging period in his life as he has been forced to look for other sources of income.
He said he was one of the many affected athletes during the Covid-19 pandemic. “When the family depends on you, you need to pull up your socks despite the challenges,” he said.
The 2015 Bologna Half Marathon champion added that his dream has always been to run at the World Marathons Majors, which include Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City.
He added that getting an opportunity to participate at next year’s World Championships in Budapest would also be a dream come true. “I am not certain how my program will be because my management will plan that,” he said.
Birech said his teammates including London Marathon champion Amos Kipruto and Boston Marathon champion Evans Chebet are the people behind his motivation.
“My teammates inspire me and they give me the hope that I can still run,” he said.
