Africa-Press – Kenya. Buccaneers captain Winston Chekai has said the team is focused on beating General Service Union and Kenyatta University in their quest to lock a top-six finish in the Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) league.
He said the fact that their losses have been against teams that finished the league in the top four last year gives them the drive to fight on.
Teams that will finish in the top-six in the league will book tickets to next year’s continental championships.
Buccaneers fell to champions National Cereals and Produce Board (27-19), Strathmore University (20-17), Black Mamba (20-19) and Ulinzi (28-25).
“What we are happy about is the fact that out of the losses, we had a goal difference of -13 and it’s a positive indicator going forward,” he noted.
“Now that the wave is over, we are resuming our winning ways as we hunt for a top-six finish.”
Buccaneers finished seventh last season, missing out on the top-six places by just a point following a draw against Boomerang and Chekai believes they have what it takes to hit the target.
“It is the objective of the whole team to be at the continental championships and we are pushing towards that objective together,” he said.
The league has taken a break due to next week’s general elections and Chekai said it’s hard to trace the players training patterns.
However, he said they have encouraged their players to train on their own to maintain their fitness levels for the league’s resumption on August 20.
Buccaneers are currently seventh in the 17-team league having garnered eight points from four victories.
