Africa-Press – Kenya. Lakers head coach Austin Tuju said they were targeting as many goals as possible in their 6-1 win over Kenyatta University in a Kenya Hockey Union Premier League match at City Park.
Aurelia Otieno struck a double (13th and 37th minute), Alice Aoko added two more (33rd and 43rd minutes), while Ruth Netia (25th minute) and Debra Acheing ( 47th minute) added one apiece.
Monica Kitui netted KU’s consolation in the 57th minute. Tuju lauded his team saying an improvement was noted from Saturday’s encounter, where they drew with Strathmore.
“We wanted goals since today was an easy game for us. Saturday’s match was tough even though we had an opportunity to gain our three points. This changed in today’s games as we utilised our chances. We wanted 10 goals but we are content with 6,” said Tuju.
He narrated how a tactic to start with the second team worked a genius in tiring their opposition and when the dice was cast, it was an easy ride for Team’A’.
But even though Lakers were successful on Sunday, Tuju insists they still have a long way to go in their finishing.“Even though we won with the big margin today, we still need to work on our finishing,” said Tuju, adding that the midfield and defence were excellent.
Meanwhile, Tuju insists Lakers could be a team to reckon with if only they had sponsors. “Lakers is a self-sponsored team. We have been trying to reach out to sponsors unsuccessfully,” said Tuju. “We only have eight sessions a month. How we wish a sponsor can come through and enable us to double the sessions to 16,” he added.
Tuju observed that they will have to assess Auralia Atieno, who hurt her wrist injury during yesterday’s game against Strathmore Ladies. Elsewhere, KU head coach Richard Wandera said: “I think we came here with butterflies. But to be honest, Lakers are a very strong team with top-level experience — which gave us a lot of problems.”
“We will continue working hard in training. We have seen our weaknesses and it’s just a matter of time before we correct them. We have four matches in the course of this week and they are all tough but we will do our best.” KU face Amira Sailors in their next match.
