Africa-Press – Kenya. The Council of Governors (CoG) has distanced itself from remarks made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga on the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Addressing the media after holding an extra-ordinary meeting on Wednesday, CoG Chair and Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi said the council had unanimously agreed to remove Kahiga from his position as Vice Chair.
“The Council of Governors has unanimously agreed to remove Governor Kahiga from the position of Vice Chair. The council will hold a sitting to elect and announce a new Vice Chair,” said Abdullahi.
He added that the council did not share or endorse Kahiga’s remarks, adding that they were made in his personal capacity.
“The Council totally disassociates itself from the utterances of Governor Kahiga and maintains they remain his personal opinion,” Abdullahi said.
Kahiga had earlier apologised over the comments, which were captured in a vernacular clip circulating on social media, saying his words were misunderstood and not meant to celebrate Raila’s death.
“The clip was taken while attending a burial in my home village and my remarks were in no way celebratory, what I meant is that under the current broad-based government we have seen skewed development and politically the loss of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga sends everyone back to the drawing boards,” Kahiga stated.
