Africa-Press – Kenya. Strathmore Scorpions defeated Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology to win the hockey women’s title as the Kenya University Sports Federation games concluded in Eldoret over the weekend.

The games were decimated in celebrations following the death of 16 students and members of staff following a road accident involving a Pwani university bus en route to Eldoret.

However, this did not dampen the quest for accolades as a solitary goal from Grace Bwire earned the Scorpions a deserved victory. Captain Jeriah Onsare said they were well prepared for the encounter especially after dominating proceedings early in the championships.

The majority of Scorpions’ players have played for the national team lately and Onsare believes this experience was key in this win. “Our aim was to win this title. Our experience has played a critical role in ensuring that we walk home with the title,” said Onsare.

Their male counterparts, the Gladiators, who also have a large number of players in the national team, defeated MMUST 1-0 in the final, courtesy of Brian Ogenche’s strike.

Strathmore University teams retained their volleyball titles. In the men’s event, Strathmore defeated former champions Moi University in a four-set thriller of 25-14, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-21.

Their women counterparts beat Kisii in straight sets of 25-10, 28-26 and 25-16 in a thrilling final. Strathmore University (men) and Zetech University (women) scooped the basketball titles.

Strathmore edged out Africa Nazarene University (ANU) 61-56 while Zetech beat Strathmore 48-21. ANU had earlier beaten Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) 54-46 and Strathmore were 96-36 winners over Kenya Methodist University in the semifinals

In women’s football, MMUST defeated Kisii 5-4 in post-match penalties following a barren draw in regulation time play. In women’s netball, Mount Kenya University floored hosts UoE 47-33 while MMUST beat Maseno for the men’s title.
