Construction of Narok International Airport Begins

Africa-Press – Kenya. Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina claims that the construction of the Narok International Airport has officially commenced, three months after President William Ruto launched the project.

In a statement on Monday, July 21, the senator said that the main contractors, engineers, had already landed on site to kickstart ground works, which include setting up machinery for tarmacking the runway, installing electricity sources, and erecting a fence.

According to the main contractor, the construction of the airport should be complete within the next year. The senator affirmed that he will constantly undertake tours at the site to ensure that the construction of the facility is executed as planned.

“Officially, the construction of the Narok International Airport is beginning today, and I will be here constantly to ensure that this project is completed, and we also thank the president for the support that he has given to make sure that he delivers on the promise, and also all the ministries involved,” Ledama said.

The senator has further urged the Narok County government to ensure that it completes the tendering of the airport’s terminal buildings to ensure that the construction of the facilities is completed on time.

Assured that the facility will be fundamental in catalysing the country’s economic development, by creating jobs and also boosting the country’s tourism sector.

“This is a project that is going to create jobs here and make people believe that we are focused on development and not politics, so by next year we will have direct flights flying from Europe to here, bringing thousands of tourists,” the senator said.

During his visit to Narok on May 6, the president announced that the decision to build the airport was reached after residents of the county asserted that such infrastructure would expand the value of tourism, which is their main economic activity.

According to the president, the construction of the airport would ease access to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, which is one of the world’s leading tourism destinations.

Ruto further confirmed that the county and national governments would be contributing Ksh700 million each for the project.

“When I came here for the economic forum, the people of Narok told us that since the county is known for tourism, they want an airport that will make travel easier,” Ruto said.

“Tourists from across Kenya and the world should have an international airport here that will allow us to welcome visitors and enhance Maasai Mara’s ability to generate more resources and revenue for the people of Narok County,” he added.
