Africa-Press – Kenya. The national government has disbursed Sh3.3 trillion to counties in 10 years, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has said.

This, Kingi said, demonstrates the significant commitment by the government to ensure the devolved units thrive.

Speaking in Eldoret yesterday during the official opening of the Devolution Conference, Kingi said the amount was way higher than the Sh289 billion which the devolved units have generated in the same period.

“We must now increase our abilities to generate our own revenues to avoid overreliance on the Exchequer,” he said.

Highlighting the achievements realised so far, Kingi said as the Senate and National Assembly, they have continuously prioritised bills that affects units.

He commended President William Ruto for fostering the units by ensuring timely release of funds.

The speaker urged governors to come up with regulations to seal corruption loopholes so that funds allocated are put to good use.

“After 10 years of practical implementation, it is now an indication that devolution is ready for a new course in fulfilment of the dreams of Kenyans,” he said.

“To deepen accountability, counties must come up with stringent measures to deter corruption and ensure that issues flagged by the Auditor General and Senate committees are addressed.”

Kingi appreciated the role played by counties in delivery of service to the citizenry, saying “devolution has left clear footprints in our region”.
