Africa-Press – Kenya. Evans Kapkea has been sworn in as the new Uasin Gishu deputy governor at the High Court in Eldoret.
Kapkea is taking over from former Deputy Governor John Barorot who resigned after serving for two years under Governor Jonathan Bii.
His swearing-in follows a Gazette notice by the County Secretary and Chairperson of the Assumption of Office of the Deputy Governor Committee, Edwin Bett, which announced that the swearing-in ceremony would be held on November 14, 2024, at the county headquarters.
“The swearing-in ceremony of Evans Kipruto Kapkea as the Deputy Governor of Uasin Gishu County shall be held on Thursday, 14th November 2024 at Uasin Gishu County Headquarters starting at 10.15 a.m,” part of a notice also dated October 22 read.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii officially appointed Kapkea as the new deputy governor following a court ruling on October 14.
Eldoret High Court Presiding Judge Justice Reuben Nyakundi ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and Governor Bii to gazette Kapkea as the newly appointed Deputy Governor of Uasin Gishu County.
“In exercise of the powers conferred under Chapter Eleven of the Constitution of Kenya, section 32D of the County Governments Act, 2012, and the Judgment of the High Court of Kenya at Eldoret in Constitutional Petition No. E24 of 2024.”
“County Government of Uasin Gishu and 2 Others versus Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, I, Jonathan Bii Chelilim, the Governor of Uasin Gishu County, appoint EVANS KIPRUTO KAPKEA as the Deputy Governor of Uasin Gishu County,” the Gazette notice dated October 22 read.
According to Governor Bii, former DG Barorot resigned after securing a job with an international organisation.
Bii described Barorot as a friend adding that they had several meetings before his resignation.
Kapkea has risen from a Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Tembelio Ward to the Deputy Governor.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Eldoret and is pursuing a Master’s degree in the same field at Moi University.
He has previously served as the chairperson of the Trade, Industrialisation, Tourism, and Investment Committee in the County Assembly.
He is also a member of the Budget, Finance and Appropriation Committee, the Health Committee, and the Delegated Legislation Committee.
In an official X post, Bii congratulated his new Deputy Governor and welcomed him to the county leadership.
“Congratulations, Deputy Governor Hon Kapkea Evans and welcome to this shared journey of service and growth. Your entry into this government is a significant asset to our mission, strengthening our commitment to deliver meaningful progress for the people of Uasin Gishu,” the governor wrote.
