Africa-Press – Kenya. All four reigning champions led by St Joseph’s Kitale, Dr. Aggrey, St. Anthony Kitale and Hospital Hill are two steps away from the title after matching into the semifinals at the ongoing national secondary schools sports association at the Hill School, Eldoret.
After leading Pool ‘A’ St Joseph’s, representing Rift Valley, will face Nyanza’s Miranga High who finished second in Pool ‘B’ in the girls’ handball semifinal. The Maurine Sitati-coached side continued with their superlative performance, beating Central’s Nyathuna Girls in their last Pool ‘A’ match.
“Our aim is to retain this title. We are ready to play and the ground will give us real results,” said Sitati, who will be aiming to defend their East Africa title.
The regional finals have been moved to Kigali, Rwanda dropping the earlier host city of Bujumbura, Burundi. In the second semifinal, former champions Moi Girls Kamusinga, who won Pool ‘B’ will be up against Nyathuna who finished second in Pool ‘A’.
In the boys’ handball, champions Hospital Hill will be up against former champions Musingu from Western. The Nairobi champions led Pool ‘A’ following the suspension of last year’s finalists, Kamito from West Pokot, Rift Valley. The second semifinal will feature Nyanza’s Manyatta against Mbooni.
Coast’s Dr Aggrey will face Nairobi’s Dagoretti in the first semifinal before multiple champions Laiser Hill take on Lukenya. In girls’ semis, Western’s Butere Girls will be up against Our Lady of Mercy from Nairobi while Central’s Loreto Girls will battle Coast’s Kaya Tiwi.
Boys’ hockey champions Kitale will face Mang’u from Central as Meru School take on Musingu from Western. New champions will emerge in rugby 15’s and girls’ hockey come Saturday morning.
Rugby champions Kakamega from Western were bundled out and in their place, Butula will be taking on Nairobi’s Ofafa Jericho in semifinal two after All Saints take on St Anthony’s Kitale at the Eldoret Sports Club.
Making their debut at the championships, Kitale will be out to upset the formbook despite joining the competition as a late entrant after North Eastern failed to send a team.
With girls’ hockey champions Tachasis out, the battle in the semifinals will be between Nyamira against AIC Nyayo as Tigoi from Western battle St Joseph’s Kitale. On the track at Moi Girls, Mercy Chepkorir and Ronald Kipkoech won the 5,000m and 3,000m respectively.
Chepkorir won the girls’ title in 17:03.8 after stunning Jane Gati, who was in Team Kenya to the World Under 20 Championships in Cali, Colombia to second in 17:03.0, as Anderson’s Faith Chepchumba sealed the podium at 17:15.07.
Kipkoech from Kalyanget won the boys’ title in 8:36.03, edging out Kosirai’s Victor Kiptum (8:48.9) and Boruma’s Boniface Samoita (9:03.8). Track and field action continues on Friday morning at the same venue.
