Africa-Press – Kenya. A total of nine matches are lined up in the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) League this weekend with six in the men’s category and three in the ladies’ cadre.
Men’s Premier League champions Butali Warriors have a date with Western Jaguars in Kakamega on Saturday in what promises to be a pulsating affair.
Butali top the standings with seven points from three matches after winning twice and drawing once. This will be Jaguars’ first match of the season.
Strathmore Gladiators will look to bounce back to winning ways against the Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA-U).
The Meshack Senge-tutored side lost 3-1 against Sikh Union last weekend but the gaffer is optimistic about getting the better of their rivals in the varsity derby. Gladiators will also settle scores with Wazalendo on Sunday.
Senge said: “Derbies have their own challenges. Bragging rights are at stake so we have to organise ourselves better because we have something to prove.”
“I like playing against organised teams like Wazalendo. It is easier to plan for such matches. We tend to take our foot off the gas peddle in the last quarter. We have to show maturity by managing the matches well,” he added.
Sikh will face Greensharks and Kenya Police respectively. Greensharks are winless in three matches and the team, currently at the bottom of the 10-team league, is in dire need of arresting the poor run.
In the ladies’ division, defending champions Strathmore Scorpions rub shoulders with Kenyatta University Titans. The Scorpions have posted mixed results in the five matches the team has played so far.
Scorpions have two wins and as many draws with one loss to keep the team at the apex of the standings. Titans boast of two points from the pair of draws they have managed but the league returnees face an acid test against the Scorpions.
KU also face a herculean task against record champions the Blazers. Blazers, who relinquished their title to Scorpions last season, must navigate the Wolverines’ challenge.
