Go and learn, Majiwa challenges Wazalendo ahead of Africa debut

Africa-Press – Kenya. Wazalendo legend Moses Majiwa has urged his players to express themselves freely as they prepare for their African Cup for Club Championships debut in Accra, Ghana.

The Kenyan representatives open their campaign against Egyptian side Zamalek on Wednesday at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium. Most of the Wazalendo players will be playing at the top level for the first time ever.

Majiwa, who is the Kenya Hockey Union deputy match and fixtures secretary, said the African tournament is a platform for the talented squad to learn and improve on their weaknesses.

“There’s no need for the players to burden themselves with expectations in Ghana. They need to play with a mentality that we are here to learn but at the same time put their best foot forward,” Majiwa said.

“Most of the lads are new at this stage and stage fright will be an issue but that does not mean players cannot give their best. The likes of Griffin Okombe and Danston Barasa have a wealth of experience having played in Italy and Germany respectively. They will give confidence to the squad.”

Majiwa downplayed the importance of the Zamalek encounter, saying irrespective of the outcome, Wazalendo can still sail to the semifinals in the two-pool, week-long tournament.

Wazalendo flew out to Ghana on Monday morning and will hold a training session on Tuesday to take off the jet lag. Their other opponents in pool also include Tairat (Egypt) and Ghana Revenue Authority.
