Africa-Press – Kenya. The Council of Governors paid tribute to their deceased colleagues, during the ongoing 7th Annual Devolution Conference on Wednesday, November 24 in Makueni County.
Led by the deputy speaker of the senate, Prof Margaret Kamar, the governors celebrated their fallen colleagues at the start of the Wednesday’s session.
While honouring them, Kamar stated that the council of governors had lost a number of their members, and it was important to celebrate them as heroes.
“I would like us all to stand for one minute of silence in honour of our departed heroes, some of whom we have lost via the pandemic,” she stated.
In the video shared, the governors referred to their colleagues as devolution heroes, who deserved to be honoured for the exemplary work they did.
The country has lost a number of governors since 2013, including Nderitu Gachagua, the first governor of Nyeri, Patrick Wahome Gakuru, the third governor of Nyeri and Hon. Joyce Laboso, the second governor of Bomet County.
John Obiero Nyagarama, the first governor of Nyamira county and former deputy governor of Kericho County Susan Chepkoech were also honoured.
Nderitu Gachagua died on February 24, 2017 at the age of 64 while receiving treatment at a London hospital. He served as governor from 2013 to 2917.
Gakuru died at the Thika level 5 hospital on November 7, 2017 while receiving treatment after he was involved in a terrible road accident. He served as governor in 2017 for only two months.
Laboso died of cancer on July 29, 2019 at the Nairobi hospital while battling cancer. She was 58 when she passed on and had served as governor of Bomet from 2017 to 2019.
Nyagarama passed on while receiving treatment at the Nairobi hospital on December 18, 2020, at the age of 74. He had served in the position of governor since 2013.
Chepkoech died at the Siloam hospital in Kericho county, as a result of the pandemic. She served as deputy governor from 2013 to 2021.
