Africa-Press – Kenya. Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were died from excessive bleeding, according to an autopsy conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor.
Were was fatally shot on Wednesday, April 30, along Ngong Road. The MP suffered five gunshot wounds, with bullets tearing through his vital organs, the autopsy carried out on Monday shows.
According to Dr Oduor, the lawmaker died from excessive bleeding and collapse of vital organs.
The MP died after the gunman, who had been trailing him on a motorcycle, disembarked and fired at him. The bullets hit the MP in the chest and hands.
The pathologist said some of the bullets tore through Were’s vital organs.
“We have taken samples for analysis. Further to that, we have found injuries in the vital organs. There was bullet track on the lungs, the heart, the liver and the aorta,” Dr Oduor said during a press briefing at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi, where the body is being preserved.
The wounds on the late MP’s hands indicate that he tried to shield himself during the attack.
On Friday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations confirmed that a forensic reconstruction of the MP’s final movements had been done, from the time he left parliament to the moment he was shot.
Meanwhile, fresh details about the suspects in Were’s killing continue to trickle in, with police confirming four individuals are in custody. The four were arraigned at JKIA Law Courts on Monday.
In an interesting twist, reports also suggest that a serving police officer could have been involved in the murder plot and execution.
On Sunday, the National Police Service (NPS) revealed that the individuals who committed the heinous act could be linked to a notorious gang based in Nairobi’s Eastlands. The gang is known as the Mjahidin gang. The motive of Were’s killing is yet to be established.
According to the NPS, members of the gang have been on its radar for some time in connection with violent robberies in Nairobi’s Eastlands. Investigations also led to the recovery of ‘crucial evidence’, according to the police.
Following their arraignment, the court ordered the four suspects to be detained in different police stations in Nairobi, pending the conclusion of investigations.
