Africa-Press – Kenya. Green Commandos crowned 2025 Chris Oguso tournament/ CHARLENE MALWA Green Commandos FC were crowned champions of the 2025 Chris Oguso Soccer Tournament after edging Madioli FC 1–0 in the men’s final at Mahanga Grounds, Vihiga County.
Making their tournament debut, Green Commandos pocketed Sh400,000, with Alvin Inyang’u scoring the decisive early goal and earning the Men’s Most Valuable Player award.
In the women’s final, hosts Young Ladies defeated Nice Ladies 2–1 to lift the title and claim Sh300,000.
Willy Gloria opened the scoring in the 31st minute before Mary Mumbua, the Women’s MVP, sealed victory in the 70th.
Nice Ladies’ Yvonne Atieno scored a late consolation. Jungle Ladies finished third in the women’s category after a 2–0 playoff win over Wazoefu, earning Sh50,000.
Tournament patron and Police Commissioner Chris Oguso said the next phase of the competition will focus on raising standards, improving facilities and creating clearer pathways into national leagues for boys and girls from Vihiga County.
“Our goal is to strengthen structures and ensure teams are better organised and prepared for the next level,” Oguso said, adding that planned stadium developments in Kidundo and the Musungo area will support player development.
Osugo is a former Kenyan Premier League player and is the Kenya Police FC Executive Officer.
Former participants who have progressed to top-tier football include David Simiyu (Police FC), Reagan Otieno (former Police FC), Lesley Otieno (Nairobi United), and Kakamega Homeboyz trio of Chris Masitsa, Enock Masiza and Amwayi.
In the women’s game, alumni include Jane Hato, now playing in the United States and Norah Ann and Tembesi of Police Bullets.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli praised the professionalism of the tournament, noting that scouts from top-flight clubs continue to attend the event.
A total of 64 men’s teams and 32 women’s teams competed in the 15th edition of the tournament, sponsored by Betika, further cementing its status as a key grassroots football platform.
