Africa-Press – Kenya. Former Cabinet Minister Fred Gumo has declared that President William Ruto has the wherewithal and the capacity to fight corruption.
Speaking in Busia on Saturday, Gumo who served as Westlands Member of Parliament for years, said the president must live up to his promise to fight graft within the ranks of government.
“Recently, you said you don’t want corruption in government, I know you are able, some will protest, but keep the focus,” Gumo said.
“What will kill this country is corruption, even if you raise taxes there are those who are greedy and are waiting to swallow that.”
Gumo served as MP on the opposition leader Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
The ex-Westlands MP said President Ruto should seal all loopholes for corruption by ensuring that those bestowed with leadership positions protect public resources.
“We support you and your deputy to fight corruption. There are those when given jobs, there work is to steal public funds,” he said.
“I know you very well, and I know you can work and you mean well for this country. What you want is for Kenyans to benefit,” he said.
The ex-minister said the president should ensure that recruitment for security-related jobs are done fairly and based on merit.
“There are people who have been paying up to Sh400,000 to get police jobs, these are the people who steal when they get jobs,” he said.
