Hearing of case challenging governor Wanga's win begins

Africa-Press – Kenya. The pre-trial hearing of a case challenging the election of Gladys Wanga as Homa Bay governor is set to begin Friday.

Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero filled the petition at the High Court challenging the results the IEBC used to declare Wanga as the county governor.

“We believe our victory was stolen and we need it back. IEBC declared our opponent as the winner with wrong results,”Kidero said.

Homa Bay IEBC returning officer Fredrick Apopa declared Wanga and her running mate Oyugi Magwanga as the winner with 244,559 votes against 154,182 votes garnered by Kidero and his running mate Elijah Kodo.

Kidero and his team of lawyers arrived at the court early Friday as they waited the arrival of Justice Roselyn Aburili to start the proceedings.

Lawyers representing the respondents and deputy governor Magwanga are also in the court room.

In the case, Kidero is seeking the scrutiny of the election materials and a recount of votes.

He wants to be declared the winner should the court confirm and agree with his demands.

Wanga, Magwanga and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission are listed as the respondents in the petition.

Kidero sought Homa Bay gubernatorial seat as independent candidate while Wanga was elected on the ODM party ticket.
