Africa-Press – Kenya. River Nyando in Kisumu has broken its banks and released torrents of water into nearby homes and estates.
Affected areas include Kamidumbi, Panadol and Magina.
Also affected is the Ahero market where locals fear if it rains at night, things might get worse.
“This is the time that this people need help before things get out of hand. Already, these houses are marooned, businesses have been affected. They can’t sleep here tonight,”a resident said.
Nashon Otieno said his home in Magina and garage in Ahero are filled with water.
“What is next for us? Businesses are destroyed, at home the animals are all swept away by the water. We need permanent solutions to this problems,”he said.
Residents within the area also noted that it was important for those who blocked the water ways to move to other araes to allow the water to move freely.
In Kadibo Subcounty, Kabonyo Kanyagwal residents continued to move from their marooned homes with the help of boats to safer grounds.
Various boats were seen moving around ferrying people including their house hold items.
Some of the schools within the area like Oseth Primary School in Nyangande are submerged.
The rains have also destroyed sanitation facilities such as latrines, posing a health concern to the residents.
Along the roads, temporary iron sheet structures have been constructed to provide temporary shelter to people displaced by floods.
Currently, more than 14,000 people have been displaced by floods in Kisumu county.
Most of those affected are in Nyando, Kadibo, Kisumu Central, Nyakach and Kisumu East subcounties.
One person has been reported dead after drowning in Muhoroni subcounty due to floods caused by backflow from Lake Victoria.
Some 638 families are in evacuation camps while 2,178 others have been integrated with their relatives and well-wishers.
