I will vie for president in 2027, Karua affirms

Africa-Press – Kenya. People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has affirmed that come 2027, her name will be on the presidential ballot. She urged Kenyans to consider voting in a woman president, stating that male presidents have not been able to unite them.

Karua said as president, a woman will be able to unite the country same way as she unites a family and takes care of a husband and children. “God willing, I will vie for presidency.

I will then be able to unite Kenya as a mother unites her home,” she said while addressing Isiolo residents on Monday. “A mother would not let her kids to go to bed hungry and when there is not enough food; she finds a way to divide it among them.

That is what we want for Kenya,” she said. “You have tried men since independence, this time round kindly try a woman under PLP”. In the 2022 general election, Karua was Azimio candidate Raila Odinga’s running mate.

In March 2025, Karua maintained that she would not be a presidential running mate in the 2027 general elections. She said if she is not the presidential candidate, she would rather support whoever her team will be backing.

“Personally, I have said if I’m not a candidate, I’m not going to be deputy. The deputy business ended in the 2022 elections,” she said on Hot 96.

Karua first made her stance on not deputising anyone known in January, insisting that she was done with the business of playing number two. “To my friend Senator Daniel Karaba, at this level I cannot become anyone’s deputy again.

If there’s any prayer you’re making is for me to get the president’s seat that I will vie for in the next election. That one (running mate) I got done with in 2022,” she said then.

“I did my work (asking for votes) thoroughly, if you, my supporter, haven’t done your work thoroughly, I have gone past that stage. Just wait, I will ask for your vote, and I will vie for the top position.

” Karua insisted that she will continue to work with like-minded people to strengthen the country’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. She unsuccessfully vied for the presidency in 2013. In 2017, she sought to become the Governor of Kirinyaga but lost Anne Waiguru.
