Africa-Press – Kenya. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has unveiled plans to register 6.3 million new voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement on Monday, September 15, the Commission revealed its intention to bring the total number of registered voters to over 28 million, the highest in the nation’s history.
As the Commission began training its staff on the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon urged staff to realise the role CVR played in elections and rise up to the occasion.
The training came ahead of the commencement of a nationwide voter registration exercise slated for Monday, September 29, 2025, where Kenyans who recently turned 18 and citizens who had previously not registered will be eligible.
Voters who need to update their information will also be required to participate in the registration exercise.
“The Commission projects to enrol an additional 6.3 million new voters, raising Kenya’s electoral voice to over 28 million strong,” IEBC noted.
Aside from the training of staff, other preparatory measures were put in place by the Commission, such as mapping registration centres across the country to ensure accessibility for all citizens.
Other activities include consultative stakeholder forums at the constituency level to enhance public awareness and engagement, and consolidating geospatial data at constituency, county, and national levels to better guide resource allocation and planning.
Another measure is to ensure that the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits were properly configured and tested in preparation for the rollout.
Eligible citizens will be able to register at any IEBC constituency office, except in areas where by-elections are currently ongoing.
Services offered at the offices will include new voter registration, transfer of registration to a new location, correction or updating of voter details, and inspection of current registration status.
As per Article 83 of the Constitution, a person qualifies to register as a voter provided they are a Kenyan citizen aged 18 years or older and are in possession of a valid Kenyan Identity Card or Passport.
The individual must also not already be registered elsewhere and should never have been convicted of an election offence in the past five years.
Once the exercise kicks off, eligible voters will need to complete the appropriate voter registration forms based on their individual needs. Form A is for new registrations, Form B is for changes in a voter’s particulars, and Form C is for the transfer of registration to another electoral area. Form D is for filing claims or objections, while Form E is for appealing a registration officer’s decision.
For new registrations, an eligible individual must visit a designated registration centre with a valid Kenyan ID or Passport. They will be required to complete a statutory form and provide personal and biometric data, including fingerprints and a photograph.
Once registered, the voter will be handed an acknowledgement slip as a formality, although the slip will not be required for identification on election day.
