Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has insisted he is on a journey to fully reduce the cost of living in the country. Speaking to Meru residents on Saturday, the head of state said the country will see the price of unga reducing to up-to a standard Sh150.
“My government will ensure every family is fed, I want to thank all the farmers for standing their ground, the journey has just started, by last week the price of unga was Sh170, this coming week you will see the changes,” Ruto said
Ruto also said his mission is to eliminate the hunger shame and focus on building the country forward. “Demonstrating will not help, putting sufuria on the head is not the solution, the only solution is carrying your seeds and fertisers on your head to the farms,” he added.
“When I took over the price of unga was Sh230, right now, slowly by slowly it will reduce to an affordable price.”
Lowering the cost of living is one of the demands presented by the opposition leader Raila Odinga, who led his supporters in carrying sufuria on the head to symbolise hunger.
The opposition want the prices of unga to go down to a minimum of Sh100. He has promised fresh round of streets protests if the price of unga does not fall to Sh100.
Last week, at least three millers reduced the price to unga to Sh158 while major brands still retail at Sh190- Sh230. Two brands however, dropped prices for their unga with one of them selling at Sh162, down from Sh180.
