Jubilee Demands Recount in Kiambaa By-election

Africa-PressKenya. The Jubilee Party has expressed dissatisfaction in the manner in which the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) handled the Kiambaa by-election.

In a presser held at the Party’s Pangani office, the ruling party demanded a recount claiming that their candidate won but was rigged out.

Taking the stand, the Party’s candidate Kariri Njama boldly declared that he was the winner but was denied a chance to serve the people.

“I will say with authority that we won and I want to assure them that we will fight for this win and we get it to the people of Kiambaa.

“(What) I want to assure the people of Kiambu is that I will continue being of service to them and work with the government and people to ensure that we serve and we ensure there is no void in Kimbaa,” stated Njama.

During the presser, Jubilee Vice Chair Raphael Tuju argued that the party had given its all during the campaigns and won.

“We are happy to take the flack and responsibility where we have fallen short of expectations… We think we gave it our best shot and I think we actually won that is the message that you are getting from this group,” stated Murathe.

UDA Party’s Njuguna Wanjiku was declared the winner in the Thursday, July 12, by-election after garnering 21,773 votes. Njama was the runners up with 21,263 votes.

“We wish to categorically state that we are dissatisfied with how the IEBC managed the by-election, particularly the tallying process. We demand a recount of the vote and will in the coming days pursue this,” read a statement after the Jubilee Party’s meeting held on Monday, July 19.

Other leaders who attended the meeting alongside Tuju include Murang’a Woman Rep Sabina Chege and Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu.

The leaders noted that they had agreed to work together to strengthen the party after it emerged that leaders had turned against each other in the wake of Kiambaa loss.

After the loss, some lawmakers in the party blamed it on the leadership of the ruling party including Tuju and Murathe claiming that they should pave way for fresh leadership.

Kieni MP Kanini Kega argued that top leaders of the party need to pave way for fresh leadership.

He argued that they failed to show up on the ground and offer support to Jubilee candidate Kariri in Kiambaa.

Additionally, Garissa Town MP Aden Duale stated Jubilee Party has serious structural problems. He claimed that the key organs of the Jubilee Party ceased to function.
