Africa-Press – Kenya. Wiper Democratic Movement has announced that Kalonzo Musyoka will convene a meeting of leaders from the Ukambani region to chart a way forward as the country heads to polls in eight months.
Led by Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior, the leaders stated that the meeting scheduled for Saturday, January 15, was meant to discuss the political direction Kalonzo would take in the August polls.
During his address, the Senator stated that the weekend meeting would bring together aspirants and opinion shapers from the region.
“We would like to confirm that the lower eastern leaders meeting scheduled by his excellency Kalonzo Musyoka has invited leaders to his Yatta farm on Saturday, January 15.
“Our meeting will be used to discuss the way forward for the community in regard to the political direction we shall take as we approach the General Election on August 9,” Mutula stated.
The statement by the Wiper leaders came after reports emerged that Kalonzo was planning to ditch OKA and join Azimio la Umoja.
For the past few months, Kalonzo has taken a soft stance when questioned about working with ODM leader Raila Odinga. This was after the Former Prime Minister attended the launch of his presidential bid.
During the event, Odinga received a heroic welcome from the Wiper delegates who cheered him after he stated that he would work with Kalonzo in the future.
However, during the press briefing, the Makuenni senator played down coalition talks between the two leaders further addressing reports of Kalonzo quitting the One Kenya Alliance – OKA.
He stated that contrary to reports, a coalition agreement with Raila was not part of the agenda for the Saturday meeting.
“We have seen the rumours circulating that either the party leader of Wiper is going to quit the presidential race or is going to join Azimio. Those kinds of things are not why we have called for this meeting,” he stated.
Kilonzo added that there were no differences in OKA after reports that there was a rift in the alliance after speculations of a deal between Deputy President Willian Ruto and Amani National Congress leader, Musalia Mudavadi.
The Senator stated that a technical team was working on a coalition agreement with the expectation the OKA flag bearer will be announced in due course.
“For the avoidance of doubt, there is no difference within the secretariat of OKA. It is true that we are preparing documents of who the coalition flag bearer will be,” he stated.
