Africa-Press – Kenya. The 2019 National Sevens circuit winners KCB have made four additions to their squad ahead of the Dala Sevens.
The bankers, keen to reassert their dominance in the shorter version of the game, have brought in former Kenya under 20 international and Kabras player William Opaka, Mwamba and Mombasa flyhalf Elvis Namusasi, Menengai Oilers star Austin Sikutwa and Blak Blad’s Lionel Ajeliti.
KCB Sevens coach Andrew Amonde believes the four will create depth and ensure a competitive environment during the six-leg tournament.
“All the four signed are backs. We observed them in the last couple of years and we know what they bring to the squad. We are relishing the challenge of playing in the series from next month,” noted Amonde.
The bankers played in a four-team tournament last week at the RFUEA ground, also involving Quins, Nakuru and Mwamba.
Amonde, a former Kenya Sevens captain, called it a good outing.
“It was a good tournament where we looked at our structures and combinations. With one week of training left before we go to Kisumu, we will have time to correct the mistakes we identified,” observed Amonde.
The Thika Road outfit beat Mwamba 24-0, Nakuru 27-0 before losing 19-12 to Quins.
Amonde believes a competitive Sevens tournament with the likes of defending champions Oilers, Strathmore, Mwamba and Quins all tipped to do well.
“The series will be very tough. There are five teams that are well-matched. We have to be on our game from the first to the last whistle,” added Amonde.
KCB have a good record at the Dala Sevens, winning four titles — 2004, 2006, 2014 and 2019.
They finished second with 107 points last season after winning the Kabeberi Sevens and finishing runners-up at the Christie Sevens as well as losing semifinalists at the Driftwood, Dala, Prinsloo and Kakamega.
