Africa-Press – Kenya. KCB mercurial forward Derrick Otanga has clinched the June Football Kenya Federation Premier League Player of the Month.
Otanga joined the bankers from Wazito at the start of the season. He played a key role in KCB’s impressive run in June, where they were unbeaten after winning thrice and drawing once in their league matches.
The bankers narrowly missed out on the Caf Champions League slot after emerging second behind Tusker by June 30—the deadline set by the continental football governing body CAF for all federations to present names if representatives for continental assignments.
Otanga was outstanding throughout the month, scoring two goals in the team’s impressive record that saw them collect KCB a total of 10 points.
He opened his account with the all important goal in their 1-0 win over Bidco United at Thika Stadium on June 16, then scored the lone goal that saw them pip 1-0 win over Mathare United at Ruaraka Grounds.
Otanga beat two of his teammates Nashon Alembi and Joseph Okoth emerged second and third respectively. The other nominee was Gor Mahia keeper Gad Mathews.
The award comes with Sh50,000 cash reward courtesy of Betking Premier League and a personalized trophy. The winners of the monthly awards are selected by a panel of sports journalists.
Otanga becomes the sixth recipient of the award after Elvis Rupia, Henry Meja, William Wadri, Kelvin Opiyo and David Odhiambo who were feted in December, January, February, March and May respectively
