Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Defence Forces men and women’s teams have their eyes firmly set on next month’s Kenya Handball Federation Super Cup.
Yusuf Kipruto, who manages both teams exuded confidence on Wednesday that they remain the teams to beat at the tournament.
He said they have moved on from the disappointment of failing to win the national titles but will now engage another gear in the two-week show that throws off on May 13 at Nyayo Stadium.
“I am happy and satisfied with what my coaches are doing and players too for a good job. We are now a full house,” Kipruto offered.
Ulinzi fell to winners National Cereals and Produce Board in the race for the title while their women’s side, Sharks were also runners up to Nairobi Water Queens.
Among those who have resumed training are: Gideon Kiprotich, Musa Ndombi, Andrew Ndeda and Abel Weru.
The women’s side welcome back Caren Lutengeya, Sarah Wasike, Isabela Wanyama, Sharon Mulei, Dorothy Mwachuma and Sharon Chelule.
Apart from Ulinzi, league winners NCPB, General Service Unit (GSU) who were third and fifth-placed Black Mamba are all in contention.
Also in the mix are university sides Strathmore, who finished fourth in regular season and Kenyatta, who were sixth.
NCPB won the 18-match men’s league title with 35 points just failing short of a clean slate after drawing with Ulinzi in the season’s final fixtures.
Water Queens, on the other hand, were unstoppable in the women category garnering maximum 44 points from 22 matches.
Queens face Sharks, NCPB, who bagged 36 points, and Bungoma-based Rangers, who finished fourth on 32.
Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) fixtures coordinator George Asimeto said that after Super Cup, teams will have a few weeks break before the 2023 season starts.
