KeNHA urges courtesy as traffic builds on Nairobi-Nakuru route

Africa-Press – Kenya. Motorists planning to travel on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway have been warned of heavy traffic snarl-up along the highway as families travel home for Christmas and New Year festivities.

In a statement, the Kenya National Highways Authority advised motorists planning to use the route to exercise road courtesy to avoid worsening the situation.

“KeNHA wishes to notify motorists plying or planning to use the Nairobi – Nakuru (A8) Highway of a traffic buildup between Gilgil town and the rail over road bridge as people travel for the festive season. Motorists are advised to exercise road courtesy and are further urged to avoid overlapping as it will cause unnecessary delays,” the authority said in an advisory on Friday.

Photos shared online by travellers showed long queues of vehicles stuck in traffic at different sections of the highway. On September 2, travellers plying the route were stranded on the road for over 10 hours.

KeNHA said the traffic building up was caused by a traffic incident near the rail over the road bridge between Gilgil turn-off and the weighbridge. The highway was converted into a parking lot as motorists worsened the situation by overlapping.

The authority advised trucks to delay their travel until the situation at the Gillgil area was contained. “Further to our earlier advisory, motorists planning to travel between Nairobi and Nakuru are advised to use fly over-Njabini-Olkalou-Lanet routes,” KeNHa said in a statement.
