Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Aquatics and the Private and International Prep Schools Sports Association (PIPSSA) will host a specialised water polo training clinic for coaches and sports teachers this Friday at Oshwal Academy Nairobi Nursery campus.

The one-day clinic is expected to draw participants from leading institutions, including Oshwal Academy, Swaminarayan, Kigwa Ridge, School of the Nations, Potterhouse School Runda, Samaj and Nova Pioneer.

The initiative marks a strategic push to introduce and expand water polo at the grassroots level by equipping educators and coaches with the technical knowledge required to grow the sport.

PIPSSA Schools chairperson Jedidah Munyua urged both private and public institutions to seize the opportunity. “We encourage coaches and sports teachers from across the country to register for this clinic.

As a network of private and international schools, PIPSSA aims to include water polo in our sports circuit to diversify aquatic sports offerings,” she said.

Munyua added that PIPSSA Schools plans to officially introduce water polo competitions from next season in September, with a focus on youth development through structured, long-term pathways.

The clinic will be led by Paul Mungai, who highlighted its importance in shaping the sport’s future in Kenya. “I would like to thank Kenya Aquatics and PIPSSA Schools for this initiative to start water polo at the grassroots.

As a country, we aim to field a national water polo team for the 2032 Olympics, which is a realistic and achievable goal with support from all stakeholders,” Mungai said.

He termed the clinic essential for schools seeking to broaden their sports programmes beyond traditional swimming. “This is a must-attend clinic for any school intending to diversify its aquatic sports program rather than focusing solely on pool swimming.

It’s also encouraging to see stakeholders embracing open water disciplines — that’s the right trajectory for the country,” he added. With growing institutional backing and a clear development pathway, the clinic could mark a turning point for water polo in Kenya.
