Kenya is officially in 6th Covid wave - PS Mochache

Africa-Press – Kenya. The Ministry of Health has confirmed that Kenya is currently in the 6th wave of Covid-19 infections.

Health PS Susan Mochache on Wednesday expressed concern that despite counties having made positive strides in preparedness the risk of the health system getting overrun is real in case of a more violent strain.

The PS spoke during the launch of an accelerated Covid-19 vaccination campaign in Vihiga County.

This comes even as the ministry continued to lament over the low uptake of Covid-19 vaccines.

The relaxation of the containment measures by the ministry in March has seen the uptake drop from a daily average of 200,000 vaccinations per day in February 2022 to the current 15,000 per day.

“The daily data we receive show an increasing number of cases. We have now confirmed that Kenya is currently in the 6th wave of Covid-19 infections,” Mochache said.

“I urge other counties to accelerate the Covid-19 vaccination rates in view of the current high positivity rate of more than 10 per cent.”

The PS has emphasized the need for Kenyans to continue adhering to the public health and social measure as a personal responsibility.

She added that the mandatory wearing of masks when in contact with other people in closed/confined spaces such as indoor meetings, shall continue.

“It is therefore imperative that counties ensure that they have vaccinated all their eligible populations as quickly as possible to prevent further loss of lives from Covid-19 and reduce the likelihood of the emergence of new variants.”

The ministry is targeting to vaccinate all adults by the end of December 2022 and 50 per cent of the teenage population aged 15-17 years.

Data shows that to date, just 31 per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated.
