Africa-Press – Kenya. The Kenya Railways Corporation has warned Kenyans against using unscrupulous Facebook groups to book tickets on the Madaraka Express. Taking to social media on Tuesday, Kenya Airways flagged four such groups and pages, each of which had tens of thousands of members.
“Please note these pages are managed by fraudsters who are out to con unsuspecting members of the public. Whenever you want to speak to us, please reach us through our official contacts,” Kenya Railways warned.
In each of the flagged groups, a phone number had been provided to facilitate the ‘ticket sales’, a tactic that is being used to facilitate first contact.
The phone numbers are also being paraded as the customer care number for Kenya Railways, encouraging travellers who need help booking the tickets to call.
As such, the corporation has told Kenyans to only confirm their official contacts on its official website and verified social media pages of X and Facebook.
They can also email the corporation or Metickets, the platform used to actually book the tickets. Kenya Railways has relayed that tickets for the Nairobi-Mombasa train can only be accessed through three distinct channels.
Firstly, the tickets can be bought online at metickets.krc.co.ke, where one can get the tickets strictly online by inputting their preferred travel details and paying through mobile money.
You can also buy the tickets using the USSD code *639#, and finally, the tickets can be bought physically at any Madaraka Express Passenger service stations.
“We urge the public to remain vigilant and book exclusively through our official Kenya Railways platforms. Protect yourself from fraud!” Kenya Railways warned in an August notice.
The Madaraka Express is a passenger train service that runs on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line and primarily travels between Mombasa and Nairobi, with stops at several other stations along the way, including Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, Voi, Miasenyi, and Mariakani.
