Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has said the government will adopt a radical remuneration policy responsive to the cost of living. Under the new plan, public and private sector wages will be rationalised to address disparities while the minimum wage will be guided by sustainability and productivity.
Speaking on Monday when he presided over the 58th Labour Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, Ruto said he was keen on enhancing workers’ welfare and labour interests to boost productivity.
The President said the government is already making progress in furthering labour rights in the country. He explained that the nation will fulfill its international obligation in upholding labour rights and welfare of workers in line with the International Labour Organisation Convention.
Ruto said the Work Injury Compensation will also be refined into a social insurance scheme. “A compensation model based on employer liability is stale. We must transform it to ensure sustainability,” he said.
The President asked workers to sharpen their skills to boost their employability and boost their income. “We have made training opportunities available throughout the country in vocational education and training opportunities,” he pointed out.
The Labour Day celebrations were attended by several key figures including Central Organisation of Trade Unions secretary general Francis Atwoli and other union leaders.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi, CSs, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and various MPs were also present.
