Africa-Press – Kenya. Veteran media personality Leonard Mambo Mbotela has been sworn in as a board member of the National Heroes Council.
The event was overseen by Chief Justice Martha Koome at the Supreme Court.
“Witnessed the swearing-in of Leonard Mambo Mbotela as a member of the National Heroes Council following his appointment last month,” she said.
The CJ stated that Kenya can build a new culture and practice of identifying, celebrating and supporting our unsung heroes and heroines when they’re still with us.
“That is the only modest way through which we can show appreciation for their heroic acts,” she said.
Last month, Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and Heritage Amina Mohamed appointed Mbotela as a member of the council.
He will serve as a member for a period of three years with effect from August 5, 2022.
The mandate of the National Heroes Council which includes the identification, selection and honouring of national heroes is an important one as our national story is largely the narrative of the contribution of our heroes to nation-building.
According to Kenyan Law, the council shall consist of not more than 13 members.
Mbotela, who is famous for his ‘Je, Huu ni Ungwana?’ segment on TV and radio had been unwell and hospitalised for some time
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta was among the many well-wishers who helped offset his huge medical bill at the time.
At the same time, members of the Copyright Tribunal were also sworn into office at the Supreme Court Building.
They will serve for a period of five years.
“Congratulations to Chairperson Elizabeth Lenjo and other Members on their competitive recruitment, appointment and installation to steer the Copyright Tribunal,” Koome said.
The Copyright Tribunal is one of the institutions that are intended to further the objectives of Article 40(5) of the Constitution which instructs the State to support, promote and protect the intellectual property rights of the people of Kenya.
