Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Lionesses will play in the inaugural women’s Africa Cup in the new year, chairman Oduor Gangla has announced.
Felix Oloo’s charges will face South Africa, Madagascar, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe among others.
The tournament will be a big boost for Kenya who failed to qualify for the Rugby World Cup repechage after losing to Colombia 16-15 in August.
Kenya Lionesses will have to wait until 2025 to have a shot at qualification for the next World Cup.
Gangla said the start of the women’s league last month will boost their push for glory come the Africa Cup.
“We now have league up and running and so our selectors and coaches will have an array of players from the various clubs to look at and it will be a boost for our team in the years to come,” he added.
The women’s league started last month and will conclude in March when the Lionesses will start their preparations for the continental event.
Speaking separately, Oloo said the fact the training period will be four months, will be ideal to sharpen the team and get the combinations sorted out.
“There is room for improvement and the girls have learned their lessons from this year and will be better once the international fixtures resume,” he added.
The Nakuru tactician expressed confidence that Kenya will qualify for the next World Cup.
“The structures are now in place and we just need exposure. By playing in the new tournament consistently, I believe we will be there in three years’ time alongside the established nations,” he said.
Elsewhere, KCB Rugby and Kenya Under-20 head coach Curtis Aluoch Olago has attained World Rugby 15s Level Three certification.
His club confirmed the new development via its social media accounts why congratulating him for the feat.
Olago joins Kenya Simbas head coach Paul Odera and Charles Ngovi on the list of coaches who hold World Rugby Level 3 coaching certificates. His assistant Dennis Mwanja has also attained World Rugby 15’s Level Two certification.
The purpose of the level three course is to enable coaches to develop more advanced knowledge and skills.
Olago has guided the bankers to five Kenya Cup titles, two Enterprise Cup titles and three Impala floodlit titles in the last nine years.
