Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya is hosting a two-day high-level meeting to discuss the country’s plan to locally manufacture healthcare products.
The meeting brings together officials from the World Health Organization and the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB).
Key on the agenda is to deliberate on the country’s regulatory systems strengthening as the country gears towards becoming a leading regional hub for the production of medicines and healthcare supplies.
Kenya is rooting for local manufacturing of health products to reduce costs and ensure accessibility for all citizens.
The PPB chairman Charles Githinji has emphasised the crucial role of local manufacturing in providing affordable healthcare to all Kenyans and reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting local pharmaceutical production.
“This agenda prioritises the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals within the country to guarantee affordable healthcare for every Kenyan, regardless of their background or status,” he said.
Githinji has, however, acknowledged the challenges faced, including inadequate human resources, which pose strategic implications.
Acknowledging the competitive potential of local manufacturers and their capacity to expand, the government is determined to leverage UHC and scale up the production of essential supplies.
The meeting is expected to provide valuable insights into strengthening the national regulatory system and the local pharmaceutical industry.
Also in attendance are members of the PPB board including the CEO, directors and senior managers.
The visit underscores Kenya’s commitment to ensuring the highest health standards for citizens, with local manufacturing at the core of the country’s healthcare agenda.
Githinji has reaffirmed the board’s commitment to continuous capacity building for local manufacturing, compliance with good manufacturing practices, and ensuring the safety and efficacy of medicines.
He underlined the critical role of local manufacturing in achieving effective and affordable healthcare.
