Africa-Press – Kenya. Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, has appointed Michael Maina Kamanda, the son of politician Maina Kamanda, to a state job.
In a Gazette Notice released on Friday, December 24, CS Matiang’i indicated that Judith Miruka, Michael Maina Kamanda and Joseph Too, had been appointed members of the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Board.
The trio will sit at the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Board for a period of three years starting December 19, 2021.
“In Exercise of the powers conferred by section 4 (1) of the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government appoints – Judith Miruka, Michael Maina Kamanda, Joseph Too,
to be members of the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Board, for a term of three (3) years, with effect from the 19th December 2021,” the Notice read.
In 2018, Michael Kamanda made headlines after Transport Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia, sacked him from the board of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
The revocation of Maina’s appointment was announced in a gazette notice issued on June 7, 2018.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 4 of the Kenya Ports Authority Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development revokes the appointment of Michael K. Maina as a member of the Board of Kenya Ports Authority,” the notice read.
His sacking came after KPA Managing Director, Cathrine Mturi-Wairi, was suspended following a decision of the board.
Maina explained that the board reached the conclusion to sack Wairi over incompetence that had seen systems at the port fail to function efficiently.
“This has led to serious systems congestion of the port. The board observed that the above situation can only be explained by lack of effective leadership,” he stated.
But a Mombasa High Court temporarily reinstated Wairi after a motion was filed by Mombasa resident Emmanuel Kenga, who argued that her removal was unprocedural and unconstitutional.
Justice Erick Ogola also went ahead and blocked the appointment of Daniel Manduko as the MD.
CS Macharia led CSs Fred Matiang’i, Adan Mohamed and Joe Mucheru to storm the KPA offices at midnight to investigate graft and massive cargo losses at the port.
