Africa-Press – Kenya. Rizwan Mohammed will be Kenya’s sole participant at the World Swimming Championships in Abu Dhabi starting Thursday.
Mohammed will contest in the 100 and 200m freestyle events.
Olympian Danilo Rosflio was expected to compete in the six-day championship but pulled out after contracting Covid-19.
Sources close to the Sports Dispute Tribunal who handle the sport said the selection of swimmers to the World Championship has been surrounded in secrecy.
Mohammed is being coached by Mombasa-based coach Fakry Mansoor, who believes the swimmer will post personal best times if not reach g the finals in his respective races.
“He has trained well but the competition out here is tough. However, he is really excited and he is relishing the challenge of competing against the top swimmers in the world,” added Mansoor.
Mohammed will use the event as preparation for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and other events slated for the new year, according to Mansoor.
“This is a good opportunity to test himself against the best swimmers in the world and get qualification times,” added Mansoor.
Mohammed hopes the country does not get banned by FINA for failure to conduct elections after the passage of the constitution earlier in the year due to a court case filed at the high court.
“We can only hope for the best. If we do get banned, it’s our swimmers who will suffer. We, therefore hope and pray for an amicable solution” added Mohammed
Swimming stakeholders have called for a conclusion to the impasse on the sport which has been embroiled in controversy for the last four years.
