Mother of child left at daycare found, refuses to pick her up - police

Africa-Press – Kenya. Police are on the trail of the mother of a seven-year-old girl she allegedly abandoned at a daycare centre in Kamulu over a month ago. The officer in charge of the gender desk at Kamulu police station where the minor is in safe custody said on Sunday said the woman has been traced in Uthiru but she has refused to go for her daughter.

“We got the mother but she refused to come for the child. She’s believed to be languishing in Uthiru sehemu za burudani tu (partying joints),” Bernard Mumo said.

The Star highlighted the minor’s plight on Friday after her story was shared on social media. Her mother allegedly left her at a daycare centre in Kanisani, Kamulu and promised to come back for her but never returned.

Mumo said it has been over one month and two weeks since the woman left her daughter at the daycare. “Police are trailing her. We got her pictures and we will consider circulating them in case she hides,” Mumo said.

Under Kenyan law, child neglect is a criminal offence punishable by law. The offence of child neglect under Section 127 of the Children’s Act carries a penalty of a fine not exceeding Sh200,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or both.
